Avoid Expense – Free and Inexpensive Data Protection

There is tremendous opportunity in the IT services business to perform data recovery and related services. The fact is, it should not be needed as often as it is. If you are one of those people who forgets to run backups on your computer, you should really ask yourself one question. Is there anything on my computer that I would be willing to pay $895 or more to get back in the event of a loss? If there is then you should do two things:

Backup on a budget (Low or no cost)

  1. Upload your images to Flickr or another photo sharing site. In the event of a failure you can at least get your pictures back.
  2. Setup a free high capacity Email account (Such as Gmail) and setup your main account to forward all your messages to it. You will always have your emails archived.
  3. Run the backup utility that comes with your operating system to an external hard disk. Keep the disk off when not running backups, these drives run hot and have a short lifespan.
  4. Get a 2GB Mozy Home Free account (link at the end of this article) and backup your most critical files there.

Disaster recovery backup:

Two companies have emerged that have fine offerings for remote disaster recovery backups over the internet Carbonite and Mozy. These services cost under $60 a year currently and provide a robust and easy to use platform for your PC or Mac.
