Joe Reviews SB10-25 Cert Report (Video)

These are weekly reviews of the reports from CERT. Nothing too horrible this week, but I provide more insights into what to look for and why. I did review the Shockwave Player vulnerability after recording the video and determined that since it is not a common component for most of our audience it did not merit a separate bulletin and notice. This is a weekly feature here at Managed Solutions.

3 Reasons IT Pros and Informed Computer Users Should use CERT

The US-CERT Cyber Security BulletinĀ is a tool that provides frequent alerts on threats that affect computer technology. It is an essential tool for individuals in the business to see in one place the majority of known security risks affecting an extremely broad range of platforms and technologies. Here are # reasons why every IT person should review this list weekly:

  1. The list is not platform specifc and covers everything from drivers to your Mac or PC software and OS.
  2. It is sorted by the range of how critical the vulnerability is including High, Medium and Low.
  3. The layout is very logical and a basic description of the problem, scoring, links to info and to patches.

So if you’re serious about IT security or just wish to be more informed, the US-CERT bulletins can make you much more informed as to where the risks are. Don’t rely on the latest news of the hacking of Google accounts to learn about the issues, it’s already too late then.

2 Reasons to use the Facebook Retweet Feature

This morning I woke up and while scanning Twitter for news I noticed @Mashable has an article about a Facebook re-tweet feature. This is kind of a big deal for Facebook users but many Facebook users aren’t also Twitter users so I knew it would be useful to do a screencast to demonstrate the feature and talk about the benefits. The two reasons you should use it:

  1. To provide the person who original shared the content credit for their efforts.
  2. To encourage your friends to become fans of similar content that interests you.

Here is a screen cast demonstration of how to use the feature:

Droid Must Have Task Manager Application

The first application you should download is one of the Task Manager apps. These applications allow you to kill extra programs that you do not want running or failed applications that might have hung or crashed. I’ve only seen the latter once but it was nice to be able to stop it without resetting my phone. The kill function is very responsive, similar to a Unix type environment.

Droid Does Wifi Analysis for Free

Do not waste your money on expensive Wifi Analyzer hardware and software just pickup a Droid phone and download the Wifi Analyzer utility for free. This tool is useful in identifying networks that overlap and will allow you to determine if you’ve made the right decisions about the channel your wireless device is using. You can quickly and easily see if there is a strong wifi signal that overlaps yours. Unlike my example you should perform this analysis where you intend to USE your wifi client devices most. Here is a video demonstration for more clarity:

A quick investigation confirmed what I had suspected, it was a phishing attempt to compromise my Facebook account or other personal information. This video demonstrates what this message looked like and how the URL in the link gave away that it was not Facebook but in fact a .me.uk address:
