This Tech Tip explains how to adjust Collision Step Size in CIMCO Edit Ultra to balance simulation accuracy and speed based on the type of verification you’re performing.
Edit Ultra checks for collisions by placing points along the toolpath and checking at each one. It is not continuous. That means the step size you configure directly controls what the simulation can and cannot catch.
Smaller step size places points closer together. More accuracy, more CPU time. Larger step size moves faster but leaves bigger gaps between checks — and a collision that falls between two points gets missed.
The setting is not wrong either way. It just needs to match what you are doing. Use a finer step size for final verification when accuracy is the priority. Open it up for a quick sanity check when you are moving fast and looking for obvious problems, not edge cases.
Treat it like a dial. Turn it up when it matters, turn it down when speed does.
