Since I started following manufacturing trends closely, one thing that has always seemed to come up is the need for more welders. Fusing objects together, correctly, is incredibly technical. If it wasn’t, there would not be a shortage of welders. The consequences of bad welds or poor inspection practices can be premature failure and even life or death, so the stakes are high. Luckily there is an organization called the American Welding Society (AWS) that addresses advancing the science, technology and application of welding, allied joining and cutting processes. Fortunately their current Vice President, Dale Flood, also happens to live and work in the Sacramento Valley. I was able to catch up with him to discuss the organization which currently has 73,000 members, publishes books including the Welding Handbook, as well as addresses learning, standards and certification.
Like many people in the US manufacturing industry, Dale was inspired when he saw a welding machine in action. In two weeks after you’ve all recovered from your Thanksgiving feasts, we’ll be learning about his career and path to becoming the VP at AWS in Episode 4 of the Manufacturing Advocates Podcast.
