Today, many of you are likely recovering from a much smaller than usual Thanksgiving Day of food, friends, and family. With that in mind, today is more like a “Two-Minute Gemba.”
I recently finished reading “Surely You’re Joking, Mr. Feynman!“, an autobiography by physicist and overall curious character, Richard Feynman. Feynman was involved with the Manhattan Project, an extraordinary chapter in our history and (quite different from today) struggle for humanity. Feynman’s story is a way to see a very different world from a unique character, and it is often laugh out loud funny. I had a hard time putting it down.
Fast forward to the struggle of recent months: The substantial global effort to produce a vaccine has started to bear fruit. This project is focused on preserving lives and breaking out of a pandemic.
Then and now, the stakes for humanity are quite high.
When I heard the news about the relatively successful Pfizer and Moderna Covid-19 vaccine trials, it allowed me, for a moment, to recall what it was like to leave the house, see people, shake hands, and travel without concern. Then, when I started to think about the effort to create these vaccines, I realized that US manufacturers likely played a huge role in enabling these companies capabilities to produce quantities of vaccines at scale.
When the shelter-in-place directives for Covid-19 kicked in here in California, I sent an email to all of Managed Solutions customers. In the email, I asked if there was anything we could do to help them. In the coming months, millions of workers across the country lost their jobs through no fault of their own. This week, I thought it might be a good time to suggest checking in on your networks. Many of you have the day off, and so do your peers. Networks are like living organisms, they require feeding to prosper. They represent tremendous potential for your personal and professional well being.
