We are excited to introduce our newest intern, Joseph Maloney, an enthusiastic and driven future engineer from the Sacramento Valley area of California. As he embarks on this internship, Joseph hopes to learn more about engineering consulting, problem-solving, and designing solutions to real-world engineering challenges.
Recently, our team asked him a few questions so you could get to know him better. Below is what he shared with us.
Engineering Career Full-speed Ahead
His academic journey has been marked by a love for challenging and engaging subjects. His favorite class so far? A community college calculus course which proved both challenging and fun and also gave him an opportunity to connect with fellow math enthusiasts.
Joseph’s next stop is university, and he plans to attend a top-tier engineering school. His choices include UC Berkeley, Cal Tech, Princeton, and MIT. He has set an ambitious goal of majoring in aerospace or mechanical engineering with a double major in math. After completing graduate school, he would like to work as an industry engineer, contributing to projects which constantly and progressively move technology forward.
When asked what he hopes to accomplish in his future engineering career, he told us he aims to work on problems which challenge his abilities and require deep thinking and creative problem solving. He hopes his work will make a positive contribution to society.
Having Fun While Achieving Goals
In his free time, Joseph is an adventurer and creator. He enjoys multiple hobbies like rock climbing, hiking, building RC planes, flying FPV drones, snowboarding, biking, gaming, and working with CAD software. Whew!
His proudest achievements are winning multiple design competitions and becoming president of his high school STEM club. One of his big goals in life is having a career which aligns with his passion for engineering. Since he enjoys spending time working on engineering projects, he says it would be amazing to have a job allowing him to do this.
Our new intern is not all about academics though. The funnest thing he has done so far? He told us he had an awesome time hiking Desolation Wilderness and snowboarding double black diamonds at Kirkwood (both at Lake Tahoe). He dreams of skiing in the Swiss Alps and fishing in Alaska someday soon. Not a bad dream to have!
Dedicated to Making a Difference
Joseph describes himself as committed, hardworking, and competitive. He is someone who enjoys getting to the root of a complicated problem and loves a good competitive event. His family would describe him as a kind brother who likes hanging out with family and going on adventures. While his favorite teacher describes him as being engaged, eager to participate, and always contributing to a positive class culture.
Asked to share a favorite quote, he says this one from Thomas A. Edison resonates with him in many ways: “I have not failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.” This is a great mindset!
We are thrilled to have such a dedicated and enthusiastic individual on our team and look forward to seeing the amazing contributions he will make in the future.
